From giving herself permission to dream, the chance to explore her creativity, Phephe speaks from her heart to inspire the next generation.
Like most kids, I held a crayon before I held a pencil.
The only difference is that I never let go of that crayon! Growing up, I had a lot of support and encouragement to nourish my creativity, but I didn’t know how to turn that into a career.
Somehow, between my dad being a carpenter and my nonstop drawing, I decided to study architecture at USC. This led to my career in real estate and even building a successful business with two of my friends in the student housing industry.
Still, I couldn’t put down my brush, and while I was gaining confidence as an entrepreneur, I also began building PhePhe Rose as a brand and artist for commission. Fast forward to now, and I’ve turned my creative drive into not one, not two, but THREE successful businesses: Brush Up Your Brand™, Brush Up Your Space™, and my work as an illustrator.
Now I’m passing on everything I’ve learned to younger generations because I want them to know that their creativity doesn’t need to be sidelined to hobbies. With confidence behind their talents, courage to persevere, and the right mentors to guide them, there are endless opportunities for building a creative career. As a woman of color (I’m Mexican and Filipina), I especially want to encourage other young people of color to pursue their creative dreams. We don’t often see successful creative entrepreneurs who look like us, but we’re definitely out there.
